The Play is a genre:
Comedy is the Genre for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. It is comedy because it has to overcome obstacles that are not common in a Shakespeare comedy. The first would be misdirected love, and the second would be parental disapproval. The comedy aspect of this play is that it doesn’t dwell on the emotions but rather on the situations in which the characters find themselves. Hermia loves Lysander, but Hermia wants Demetrius to marry her. This leaves her blind, as her father Egeus could exile her and send her to jail. Helena is in love Demetrius and Demetrius are in love Hermia. However, everything changes when Lysander (and Demetrius) fall for Helena.

Demetrius can exile or sentence her to death if Hermia doesn’t marry him. Hermia has little time to decide on the man she will marry. She will have until the wedding ceremony of Theseus and Hippolyta for her decision. Lysander and Hermia come up with a plan. They will run to Lysander aunts’ house in Athens, where they will marry. Hermina informs Helena, Demetrius’ ex-fiancee. Hermia hopes that Demetrius will fall for her once again. Demetrius ran into the woods in search of Lysander, Hermina and their escape when it was time. Theseus discovers that the forest is their home. Theseus then takes Hippolyta and Theseus back to the City. Puck made everything right. Historical context:
1595 saw the creation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This play is pertinent to that time period. It would make a great and entertaining play. It would be a great play to see remade by the SCF.
This was a very funny play that I enjoyed reading. It would be fun to watch it live to get a different perspective.
